Yesss I’ve got a house!!! I won’t be homeless in a week! My friend Lisa and I will live together in an amazing apartment in Utrecht soon! It seems like it was all meant to be: we almost had a great house a month back, but that didn’t go through and now for this apartment, there were actually other renters but it didn’t work out.. so then we came in last – minute and got it! And it’s so much better than the first one ;) All the waiting has paid off. We were actually joking a lot about our horoscopes, which were saying good times were ahead. that we were able to get a stable life jobwise and all. Well the apartment is step 1! Yesterday evening we signed the contract :D And wow, this morning it was so weird cause the minute I opened facebook it showed: Elles, you and Lisa are facebook – friends for 4 years now! Like I said before: all meant to be haha ;)
Time to decorate!
A new house means one thing: time to decorate! Even before we signed the contract I was already drawing a map of the apartment and trying to think where I want to put what furniture. My friend already said: you should become an interior architect! Quite funny, cause that’s actually what I wanted to become when I was younger (because of playing the sims ofcourse;))! But now it’s really time to decorate, so I’ll share with you some tips and decoration ideas :) I’ll add some Pinterest pictures for inspiration!
I always prefer neutral/earth tones for my interior, but I love to spice it up a bit with some pastels here and there! We were quite lucky cause there was already an oven and fridge in the apartment, and the latter I love the most: it’s a mint SMEG fridge!! It’s so prettyyyy haha! It will definitely bring some light into an otherwise boring kitchen :)
There’s nothing better to brighten up a room than adding flowers and plants! I personally love orchids, cause they got a peaceful feel to them I think!;) We also have quite a big balcony, so I’ll definitely put some flowers there as well! And well, I even think using flowers (real or on print) are quite trendy right now, with the sixties/seventies style being ‘in’;)
If you’re apartment isn’t that big, It might be a good idea to buy a big mirror to create an optical illusion. I got mine for my birthday, an old one which we then painted white with some gold details. I love a classic mirror that is quite feminine, it gives a luxurious feel to your apartment :)
Invest in art
Recently, it’s become a trend to put cheesy quotes on the wall or other minimalistic print. It’s really a trend I hate! Ofcourse it’s ok to like minimalistic prints but I feel like people are only buying it cause it’s hip. I personally like it better when you put art on the wall that is personal and preferably unique. That gives you a special feeling and which you never get tired off. I’m lucky that my dad is a painter, so I can always ask him if he wants to paint something for me. If you don’t know any creative persons, I would advice you to invest in a good piece instead of buying a poster at Ikea. Did you know there are also many art – rentals? Where you can pay a montly fee to get a painting or other artpiece for a shorter period of time. So you can always change up your living room, cause in the end you can decide to buy it or change it for something else:)
Combine old with new
I loooooove to go to second hand shops and vintage markets! I think it’s a habit that I’ve got from my parents, they go to every ‘brocante’ they see;) As a kid I always thought, why do you buy that old shit? But now I’ve come to appreciate and like it myself! They’ve shown me that it looks great to combine antiques and retro items with a modern interior. It’s a look that I will go for as well:) But watch out! Don’t go crazy on the old stuff, you don’t want your house to look like a museum;) And try to go for timeless pieces, not things that you see a thousand times on Pinterest;)
I also really like to get inspired by Pinterest the to make decorations of my own. Once I saw an old table that hey painted the legs mint of (see picture below), I suggested it to my dad and he recreated it with the (old) table they just bought for in the garden! The things you find at vintage markets are great for pimping! A bit of paint here and there can make old pieces as new (like I did with my mirror as well!) I still have a DIY on my to do list to create a necklaces-hanger (like the pic below), with a old piece of wood (i can’t find a good one!) and cute doorknobs :) maybe I’ll find time when I’m all settled in:)
So, let me know what you think of these interior ideas! Do you have any tips for me to decorate my new apartment? :) Did you make any cool DIY decorations yourself? One thing is for sure: I can’t wait to move in our new house!!:D
