My Favourite Vinyl Records – Summer 2016

Over a year ago, I got my first record player as a graduation gift. I copied this hobby from my dad and loved it ever since! I often go searching for secondhand records at flea markets (as well as buying other stuff there) and going into record stores just to browse what albums they have. I personally own a Thorens TD166 MKII record player and I’m really happy with it. Even though I can connect Spotify to my speakers as well, I love buying records of artists I really like and I can definitely tell the difference in sound when having my record player on compared to having spotify on. It’s hard to describe but I feel like listening to vinyl records make the music sound so much more vibrant, with more depth and intonation or something compared to ‘digital’ music. I can really recommend anyone to get a good record player! :)

A while ago, I shared a review of a record I really like, namely that of Years & Years. I visited their concert too and will see them again soon at Sziget Festival in Budapest, Hungary (which I will write about later;)) Now, I’d like to share with you my top 5 Vinyl records that I’m currently listening to a lot!

  1. Flume – SkinDSC_3605

This album is incroyable! Flume is my latest buy and it’s so much different than what i’m
used to. It’s catchy, weird, mystical and it has influences from dubstep, hiphop, pop and probably more. I love it. It’s hard to describe but when listening to Flume, I feel like getting high on music ;) He switches songs with vocals with just electronic music. I think some people might call it noise, but you just have to get used to it I think ;) The album design is pretty cool too, and I got one with clear vinyl records, which I really like! My favourite tracks are Never be like you (ft. Kai), 3, Free and Tiny Cities (ft. Beck).

  1. Oh Wonder – Oh Wonder

Oh Wonder, how could I describe them. A guy and a girl singing with some electronic/piano music doesn’t do them justice. The music is so magical, cheerful and easy to sing along to. I’ve been to their concert in Paradiso, Amsterdam with my friend and it’s the best concert I’ve ever been to! It was so pure and I even got emotional (which I never ever get, mostly just chills). The music is perfect for a chilly afternoon (actually just like all these records in my top 5 haha)

  1. James Bay – Chaos and the Calm

Yes, I don’t only listen to electronic beats, I love singer-songwriter style musicians as well. I’ve always been a fan of James Morrison and this guy reminds me a bit of him (not only because they have similar first names ;)). The music is raw and real, sometimes upbeat sometimes sad. I just really love it and can listen to it over and over again!

  1. Bob Dylan – Highway 61 Revisited

Whenever I hear Bob’s voice I get excited, I really love his voice it’s very easy recognisable :) However, I never had a record of him, and I saw they had this record for sale so had to get it! One of his best songs is the opening song: Like a rolling stone. I really love it and am very happy I bought it. My vinyl collection wouldn’t be complete without him!

  1. Dire Straits- Dire straits

I never get tired of Dire Straits, I especially love the song ‘Sultans of Swing’. I really love Indie bands like them, even though they are hard to meet up to ;) When having people over, I often put this record on, it’s perfect background music for fun times like playing boardgames! ;) To me, it’s an absolute classic :)

I have many more to share, but these are my favourites right now. I’ll probably get plenty more records in the upcoming months, so be prepared for more music related posts in the future ;) What are your favourite albums to listen to currently? Do you have any suggestions for me?
